This was the second time I saw Sonata Arctica live, but the first time they were playing as a support band before Nightwish and I didn’t really know them. (懐かしい！) This time it was only them and it was VERY fun

Metal gigs are just about the only place in Japan where you can really just forget everything and go wild and let it all out, shout at the top of your lungs and jump up and down to complete exhaustion, trample over other people, etc. I could barely stand on my feet by the end.

The Japanese as a crowd are very mild, too. I could go right up front to like the 4th or 5th row without being killed or anything.

Fun fact: the word they use for “going to a metal gig” is 参戦, “participate in” + “war”. Lols.

Compiling someone else’s source code, there was one part in the program that mysteriously didn’t work like it was supposed to. During debugging, it became obvious that the program is simply ignoring an entire case statement.

The cause?

Japanese comments in the code.

case 0:
in S-JIS encoding, ends in a backslash character, making a multiline comment which screwed up the case label and the rest of that function.

Moral: do not ignore GCC’s “warning: multi-line comment”.

Edit: lol, this actually has a name: 0x5c問題 (0x5c problem). After the ascii code for backslash.

Saw a presentation today about 3D visualization, where they had a real funky off-the-shelf 3D display setup:

• 2 projectors
• polarizing lenses
• polarized glasses (none of that red-green crap)
• screen

One eye sees vertically polarized light, the other horizontally, and the result actually looks 3D… ish. Once they get the two pictures to properly overlap, that is. The 2D interface and mouse cursor are kind of distracting. But all in all it’s pretty nifty.

Such a waste to use this stuff for medical visualizations. Would work much better for games and of course rule 34.

Why am I taking this class…?

Last weekend, half my lab went to Osaka for some sort of conference.

So today, they all brought some omiyage to the weekly lab meeting. Like, at least five different kinds.

after about 2 years of promising to write my own blog software and stuff, I caved in and installed wordpress, including this hideous blue theme (not as bad as the default one but still…)

really, I’m too burned out to start doing php again, even for fun. so many juicy security holes to consider, it’s much simpler to just use something prewritten with countless hours of open-source work behind it. wordpress is essentially set up to cater to idiots, everyone can install it in about 5 minutes. very convenient.

ooh, ajax and crap. and rss. neat.

wonder if I can import my old crap somehow. not that any of it was interesting or anything.
